This is the January 2008 Member Showcase photo of the month, as judged by APME. The face of Peoria firefighter John Schnibben bears some of the soot from a house fire on the south side of Peoria, Ill. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2008. Schnibben removed his mask, only to rub his eyes with his ash covered glove to the amusement of fellow firefighters.

The Associated Press Managing Editors association awards Member Showcase Photo honors each month for the best image shared by a newspaper with other Associated Press photo users. The competition is judged by a panel of AP and member photo editors. The best of the monthly Showcase photos receives a Member Showcase Photo prize at the APME annual conference in October.
